Porto Torres

Porto Torres

From Sorso the walk continues to Porto Torres which is the end of the Camminu Santu Jacu (the Sardinian segment of the Camino Maltes).

Thetoen was built in the 1st century BC by the Romans and was called “Colonia Iulia Turris Libisonis”. Turris literally refers to “tower” probably because of pre-existing nuraghe built not far from the town.  Libisonis is derived from Pheonician because the Port was a trading post frequented by them.

With the fall of the Roman empire, the name was truncated to Turris (or tower) , which was later, during the Aragonese reign corrupted to Torres and later “Catalan” (meaning port), eventually evolving to Portotorre or Porto Torres.
