The Camino Maltes – done & dusted 422 years after the first credencial was issued by Grandmaster Alof Wignacourt to Don Juan Benegas de Cordoba. It starts from St Paul’s Catacombs in Rabat (Malta) and ends at Fort St Angelo, Birgu.
Organised by XirCammini, we stopped to visit several medieval Churches & Chapels enroute, with some opening up especially for us. The support of local councils & Mayors such as David Schembri, who recognises the touristic value of this route, is what makes this a unique experience. He ensures that signage in his localities is adequate & taken care of and he assists by opening up the iconic Churches along the way. An exemplary Mayor indeed!
The Camino Maltes officially forms part of the Camino di Santiago de Compostela, using what is known as the Aragonese route. Your official Camino passport is stamped at various Maltese sites of Faith and village Band Clubs along the way. It is an Urban Walk but largely using country side roads without traffic. An official credential is also issued to you by XirCammini and you get to see places of historical & Cultural Interest as well as enjoy the many diverse flora in season.
Thank you James Portelli and Tucc Portelli for being such amazing people, the founders and drivers of Camino Maltes.
Thanks to Visit Malta who supports this active & faith tourism experience through signage.
Well done to friends, new and old who completed it too!
